A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to do two of my favorite things… help athletes and volunteer with La Plata Search & Rescue. The Kennebec Mountain Run is a 15 mile race up into La Plata Canyon. It is organized by the Durango Running Club and they generously donate profits from the race to La Plata County Search & Rescue (LPCSAR). LPCSAR is an all volunteer backcountry rescue team based here in Durango. I have the privilege of serving as their medical director. LPCSAR provides backcountry search, technical rescue, water rescue, K9 teams and other services to help distressed persons the in backcountry or community needs in time of disaster, such as the 416 fire. LPCSAR supports the race with medical, evacuation and course marshaling with rescuers on foot, ATV, Jeeps and Motorbikes.
Fortunately, it was a safe and successful event with only the usual scrapes and blisters. Its a great local race with a beautiful and steep course. If you like trail running, come out for the 2020 event – its a great time for a great cause!
